Hot Cross Buns

One of our favorite Easter customs is homemade Hot Cross Buns. These English sweet buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday and use the symbol of the Cross with spices to signify the holiday. ⛪

Regardless of your tradition or heritage, Hot Cross Buns are delicious! We’re excited to share our Kneaders recipe to sweeten your Easter celebrations.

Dough Ingredients

  • ¾ C warm water
  • ½ C whole milk
  • 2 Tbsp of honey
  • 2 Tbsp of softened butter
  • 1 egg
  • 3¼ C all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¾ C raisins
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

Egg Wash (lightly beat together)

  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp water

Icing

  • 1 C confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 tsp milk

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients together for the dough and mix on low speed for 6-8 minutes. Dough should be soft and stretchy. Transfer to a lightly oiled bowl and cover. Let rest until the dough has doubled, about 1 hour.
  2. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a round ball. Place, seam side down, on a baking sheet lined with lightly greased parchment paper. Space about 2 inches apart. Cover until they almost double in size, approximately 45-60 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Gently brush each roll with egg wash. Place into the oven, on the center rack, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Remove and allow to cool.
  5. Prepare icing: Combine all ingredients into a small bowl. Use a fork or whisk and mix until smooth. Pipe an X on top of the bun.
